Westminister Church of Detroit

Music Series at Westminster

The 2011-2012 Season

Sunday, October 30      Brunch Concert - Bach’s Greatest Hits!

Some may find the music of Johann Sebastian Bach to be overly serious or just too monumental to think that any of his compositions might be called hits. Still, in his vast catalog there are many moments of true beauty, grace and charm. Here is a not-to-be-missed opportunity to hear such favorites as, Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring, Sheep May Safely Graze, My Heart Ever Faithful, Sinfonia from Cantata No. 29, and much more, all in Bach’s own settings for voices and orchestra. Featured soloists will be Lynda Weston Berg, soprano, and Sean Neall, baritone, with the Westminster Chancel Choir and Chamber Orchestra, directed by Dalos Grobe.

Sunday, December 4     A Festival of Lessons and Carols
Combined worship at 10:00 a.m., featuring the Chancel Choir and the Inspirational Gospel Choir. The simplicity and elegance of the traditional service of nine lessons alternating with carols for choirs and congregation provides for many the ultimate Christmas worship experience. A sumptuous light buffet and informal carol sing will follow in Calvin Hall.

Sunday, February 26     Brunch Concert/Potluck – Jazz Concert
A representative of a not often encountered school of jazz, Detroit-based jazz musician, Taslimah Bey, piano, is establishing herself as an exponent of “Stride,” a combination of classical ragtime and New Orleans traditional  improvisation. Other members of her quartet are Dwight Adams, trumpet, a mainstay of Stevie Wonder’s touring band; bassist Marion Hayden, leader of the group Straight Ahead; and drummer Djallo Djakate, versatile in everything from reggae to fusion to rhythm and blues. We look forward to a most entertaining musical experience.

Sunday, March 25         A Lenten Offering - Requiem by Gabriel Fauré.
This work is among the  few settings of the traditional Requiem text that is more suited to the church than to the concert hall. We hope it will aid in your reflections on the coming Passion of our Lord, Jesus Christ.   The Chancel Choir, soloists and chamber orchestra will present this Sermon-in-Song during worship at 11:00 a.m.

Sunday, April 29            Brunch Concert – The Detroit Lutheran Singers
Conducted by Eric Freudigman and accompanied by organist Doris Hall, the Lutheran Singers have presented concerts to the greater Detroit area since 1966. We are pleased to include them on the series. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear some splendid choral music.

Sunday, June 3             Dessert Concert – Mystery Soirée
“Life is a Cabaret…” at least for an evening! An eclectic potpourri of songs from the musical stage and lighter instrumental numbers. Dessert at 5:30 p.m.; program at 6:15 p.m.
